The McGill Method is a biomechanical assessment and treatment whereby we will be able to identify which movements, postures and loads are the cause of your chronic low back pain, how to remove those causes, and hence eliminate your pain.
The McGill Method was developed by world renowned spine mechanics researcher professor Stuart McGill after decades long research and successful treatment of the most stubborn of back complaints and is different from anything traditionally taught in the allied health care fields.
Chronic low back pain cases are unique to the individual and require time and care to properly assess and treat. We therefore take the necessary time and care to assess your back thoroughly. The McGill Method visit is a 3-hour history, examination and movement assessment specific to your chronic low back pain. This time is needed to develop a thorough understanding of your low back condition, identify your pain triggers and to coach the appropriate movements and exercises to eliminate the pain and help you on your way to recovery.
By the end of the consult you will likely have more knowledge about your back then ever before. One of the main goals of the consultation is to educate you about your back so you can manage it and move on, in the correct way, without the pain!
By identifying the postures, movements and loads that trigger pain and eliminating them, the painful irritated tissues in your back(albeit disc, nerve, facet joint) will desensitise given the opportunity to heal. This biomechanical, patient centred approach is a paradigm shift from usual care for low back pain.
Patients requiring this type of in-depth assessment have typically experienced failed management with usual care for low back pain. They have often seen one or more fysiotherapists, doctors, medical specialists (Orthopedic or Neurologist), or other therapists. Despite this, their back troubles continue.
The McGill approach does require the patient’s active participation and commitment to the healing process by incorporating new movements and exercises into day-to-day life.
You can phone or email the practice and request an appointment. The receptionist will schedule a free 10 minute phone call with Shaun who will assess whether the McGill Method is a suitable approach for you.
